Although spilling water or any other liquid on your laptop might be disastrous, you can prevent or even rescue your device if you take rapid action. To prevent irreversible damage to your laptop, take these five quick precautions.

Step 1: Turn Off Your Laptop Immediately
As soon as you spill water on your laptop:
✔️ Unplug it from the power source
✔️ Hold down the power button for a few seconds to shut it down
✔️ If possible, remove the battery (for older models with removable batteries)
Why? Electricity + Water = Short Circuit! The faster you turn off the laptop, the lower the risk of permanent damage.

Step 2: Remove External Devices & Dry the Surface
✔️ Unplug everything – USB drives, mouse, headphones, SD cards, etc.
✔️ Wipe off excess water using a dry microfiber cloth or tissue
✔️ Tilt the laptop upside down to prevent liquid from seeping deeper
Avoid using a hairdryer, as the heat can damage internal components.

Step 3: Let the Laptop Dry Completely
Now, you need to remove trapped moisture inside the laptop.
✔️ Open the laptop lid fully and place it upside down on a towel
✔️ Use a fan to blow cool air across the keyboard
✔️ Leave it in a dry, well-ventilated place for at least 24-48 hours
Avoid placing it in rice – it doesn’t help and may introduce dust particles inside.

Step 4: Do Not Turn It On Too Soon
One of people's biggest mistakes is turning on the laptop too soon to check if it’s working. If there’s still moisture inside, it can cause a short circuit.
Wait at least 24-48 hours before attempting to power it on.
